「BAKU」は、夢を売買するためにつくられた専用の仮想通貨である。
夢の売買は、新しい発想ではない。中世の日本には吉夢を買い取る「夢買い」の習俗があり、北条政子は妹の見た夢を鏡と引き換えに買い取り、天下を得たと伝えられる。夢は、現実を先取りするものだと信じられた。こうして、かつては眠っているあいだにのみ経験されるものだった夢は、この新しい中世において、また他者と共有され、価値を与えられ、売買できるモノとなった。
Dream Dockは、その夢を専門に取り扱うマーケットである。そこでは、幸福な夢も、予知夢も、忘れたい夢も、悪夢も自由に取引されている。
BAKU is a virtual currency created solely for the buying and selling of dreams. Trading dreams is not a new idea: in medieval Japan, auspicious dreams could be bought — Hōjō Masako is said to have traded a mirror for her sister's dream, and risen to power. Dreams, it was believed, run ahead of reality. Thus, in this new middle age, dreams — once experienced only in sleep — are once again shared, given value, and traded as things. Dream Dock is the marketplace dedicated to them. Happy dreams, prophetic dreams, dreams their owners wish to forget, nightmares — all trade freely here.
BAKUの名は、悪い夢を食べると伝えられる霊獣「獏」に由来する。獏は千年以上のあいだ、誰かのいらない夢を引き受け、悪夢から人間を守ってきた。その体は、象の鼻、熊の体つき、虎の脚と爪、犀の目と角、牛の尾——いくつもの生き物を寄せ集めたキメラである。
この取引所では、種を超えて夢を交換することができる。誰かの夢を買い、自分の夢を手放すたびに、私たちもまた、少しずつキメラになっていく。
BAKU is named after the baku, the chimera said to devour bad dreams. For more than a thousand years it has taken on the dreams nobody wanted and kept nightmares away from people. Its body is borrowed from many creatures: the trunk of an elephant, the build of a bear, the legs and claws of a tiger, the eyes and horn of a rhinoceros, the tail of an ox. On this exchange, dreams cross the boundary between species. Each time we buy someone's dream and let go of our own, we too become, little by little, chimeras.
BAKUを円やドルに換金することはできない。売った夢を元に戻すこともできない。だが、他の誰かの夢を買うことはできる。
BAKU cannot be converted into yen or dollars, nor back into the dream you sold. But it can buy someone else's.
